Assessment Review.

Annie's Evaluation.

This is the final outcome of my hair design based on Elizabethan hair inspired and made into a contemporary style. I am very happy with the final look that Annie created. The partings are very neat in-between the braids and the braids themselves are tight to the head and raised just like i wanted. Annie produced this look with plenty of time to spare and very quickly. I think the baby hairs could have been slicked down more thoroughly but the overall design was perfectly executed and i am very happy.  In the back of the design there was meant to be pearl pins however they were not delivered in time to be used. Overall i think Annie was very professional and created the design exactly how i had envisioned and i am thrilled to have had her as my hair design partner on this project.

What I would change:
  • The slick down hair to be more precise and thinner, using only the baby hairs.
  • The use of Pearl pins for symbolic references to youth, wealth and purity.
What I wouldn't change:
  • The braids were perfectly raised and in neat lines creating the structured look I wanted.
  • The volume and size of the backcombing for the rest of the style as this added texture and size to the hair to resemble the contextual style of the Elizabethan era.

My Evaluation.

This is the final outcome of Annie's hair design created by me. I think overall the composition of this hair design was better than my practices and I am happy with the shapes and sizes of the hair rolls as well as the pearl pin placement and plaits. I was much more accurate with my sectioning of the hair which resulted in a perfectly neat line of graduating sizes hair rolls. Because the hair is a wig I did have some trouble with blending the hair to Annie's cropped hair cut. I asked Annie if she wanted to colour  her hair with black supra colour where the natural colour showed however she said she was happy with the outcome of the hairstyle. If I could change one thing i would definitely have added the supra colour to create a more natural effect with the natural to synthetic hair as I feel this would have finished the look more. I produced the look quickly and i am proud of what I achieved as I have come from a background of no hair design whatsoever and have really pushed myself on this project.

What I would Change:

  • Add super colour to Annie's natural hair as I think the black would have been more cohesive with the overall design.
  • The tightness of the plaits on the left side of the head because from the back they look loose.
What I wouldn't Change:
  • The sectioning I created was much more structured and made the design more equal and even.
  • The pin placement as it was a last minute idea i think these really suited Annie's hair design and also added extra dimension to the hair.

My Partner practices my hair style.

Review of my Partner's interpretation of my hair design.

I think for a first attempt Annie, my partner, did really well practicing the cornrows. She did the exact amount that i wanted as well as  creating neat and thick sections of hair. because my hair is so straight and shiny we had an issue with making the plaits look thick enough and raised. However after crimping and hair spraying my hair it became more pliable.

I think Annie could have made the cornrows more the same length however this is something that can be easily changed in the next trial.

I think Annie also did a good job with the backcombing to create the texture and volume i need for my design. This effect really creates the urban Elizabethan style i was hoping for.

I think the pinning was good for a first attempt however i feel like the hair needs to be more secure as there were parts that were falling out at the back. I also think the sections could have been neater however, i think the volume is a good weight/ height and it creates the overall desired effect i want for my design.

To create an even more urban effect i wanted to stick down my baby hairs to create a very neat and structured design that adds to my urban interpretation of an Elizabethan hairstyle.  Annie did struggle with placing the hair in perfect coils however i then tried and found it equally as hard and i used Vaseline and hair wax. We have been recommended to use hair gel so in the next trial i think me and Annie will try this out to find the best way to create the effect.

Overall i think that my look was practiced well by Annie and that she produced the desired look i had intended to create. I had very positive feedback from peers after they saw the finished look in the Practical lesson so i think my design is on the right track and now needs to be perfected and also Annie will need to time herself doing it to make sure that she has enough time to complete it during the timed assessment. I will also need to buy some plait bands because the hair bands used in this practice are too thick and so aren't that easy to hide. I also want to have the embellishment of pearls to add and incorporate more symbolism from Elizabethan styles of hair.

Trial of my partners hairstyle.

Review of Trial.

My partners original design was to have five large circular twist sections on top of the head with crimped hair. This created a very traditional effect in a contemporary and modern interpretation and style in the shape of a mohawk. The rest of her hair design had the remaining hair plaited into small sections and pushed in-between the sections to add texture and the delicate style like that of the Elizabethan era. I like my partners design as i feel it is a bold and edgy look which creates a statement but still fits the criteria of the Elizabethan hair design.

At first i really struggled with this look, as my partner has naturally quite short hair so to solve this problem we are using a wig to add length in order for me to perform her desired look. I left parts out at the side to create the plaits later on in the look. The rolls themselves were easy to create one i had perfected the the technique of back combing and underpinning the hair. I noticed that as i went down the hair with rolls the began to become not as central on the head and went slightly wonky however i can practice this again and perfect it afterwards. With the wig i found it quite difficult to create partings as the wig isn't of the best quality so the wefts are sewn in circular shapes onto the netting which means whenever you try to create a dead line parting it shows all the netting underneath which isn't very good. However for this look there isn't many partings its more about the perfectly sized five rolled sections so i don't think partings will be to much of a problem. Another issue we faced was how to make the wig look natural on my partners head as it has quite a straight line at the front of the wig. To solve this problem we pulled out a thin small layer of hairs at the front of the head and hair sprayed them over the top of the wig line which created a natural finish.

The plaits on the side of the head were small dutch braids that neatly went across and in-between the sections of hair i created. They were then pinned underneath into the rolls and were no longer visible which creates and interesting and continuous look to the hairstyle. I think the plaits really pull the whole look together and add an extra dimension to the style. As you can see from the back the look is quite wonky but the next time i trial this look i will make sure it is more central. However i like the overall look and think once timed i will be able to gauge how to manage my time quickly to create the most effective version of the look. Another issue we faced was the size of the sectioned rolls. As my partner wanted the sections to all be the same size. However the wig created some issues with this plan as there wasn't as much hair sewn into the bottom of the netting as the top. So we decided to adapt the design so that the rolls get gradually smaller until the last one. I think this creates an interesting look because it shows depth and dimension within the hairstyle as well as variation of shape and size.

Trial of final design.

Trial of Final Design.

I really like how this design has progressed and come out in my trial run. I think this should be quite a straightforward and easy hairstyle for my partner to accomplish in the allotted time and i think that this design has a nice fluidity about it. I was thinking about maybe adding some small curls in the front of my design that will be slicked down onto the forehead/ side of face to create an even more urban style. I now want to buy some pearl pins so that i can embellish my design and maybe some gold ribbon or threads that i could add for an even more contemporary look while still including symbolism.

Technical File: Corn rows

Research into hair techniques for final design.

Corn Rows:

Technique:
  • Similar to french braiding except tighter and in neat rows.
  • See my french braid technical file
  • watch video below.

I have also been looking online for high fashion hair styles that include corn rows. I want to use these ideas to develop my final hair design and produce it. I definitely like the thicker corn rows rather than the thinner ones as i feel it adds more texture and volume to the looks.

Practicing cornrows:
I decided to have a little go at practicing cornrows on the Kate doll head to start of the process and then moving on to doing it on myself and other people. Here is my first attempt at  my hairstyle on the Kate doll. I think that using thicker braids will be better for my design because it creates more volume and texture to my final design.  I don't like the large hair bands on the end. I will need to buy some small clear plait bands in order to create neater and tighter braids. I tried to make perfect partings in-between each cornrow and i think i did well but need to practice it again.

Practice of smaller and larger cornrows.
